Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who do we help?

    Anyone open to the process!

    • Some people may turn to counselling when grappling with challenges like depression, anxiety, or addiction, marital conflicts, parenting dilemmas or when life feels particularly demanding.

    • Alternatively, some might seek counselling if managing anger proves challenging, trust issues arise, or significant relationships face difficulties, including those in marriage.

    • For many, the emotional distress of loneliness or grief motivates them to seek support.

Whatever leads you to take the courageous step towards counselling - know that you are investing in a really important person - YOU!

  • How long does a counselling session typically last?

Counselling sessions usually last around 60 minutes, but the duration can vary. Some sessions may extend to 1.5 hours depending on the client's needs and preferences. Some of the benefits of an extended session time are as follows:

    1. Deeper Exploration - for a more thorough examination of complex or deep-rooted issues.

    2. Complexity - for multifaceted problems, extra time can enable a more comprehensive approach.

    3. Building Trust - longer sessions can contribute to building a stronger therapeutic alliance by fostering trust and connection.

    4. Processing Time - some individuals require more time to process thoughts and emotions to gain insight and healing.

    5. Reducing Frequency - longer sessions can mean needing less frequent sessions, accommodating those with busy schedules.

  • How often should I attend counselling sessions?

The frequency of counselling sessions depends on your individual needs and the nature of the issues. Initially, sessions may be more frequent and then spaced out as progress is made.

It is recommended to commit to at least 6 sessions to fully see and cement the benefits of counselling, but you are welcome to discuss what you think will work best for you.

  • How long does counselling take to show results?

Some people may experience positive changes very quickly within the first or subsequent few sessions, while others may need more time. The duration of counselling sessions varies for each individual, depending on the nature and complexity of the issues being addressed.

A good counsellor will check in with you throughout the process to make sure you feel you are making progress towards the goals you have for counselling.

  • Is counselling confidential?

YES, confidentiality is a fundamental aspect of counselling. Information shared during sessions is kept strictly confidential and will not be discussed with any other person. There are exceptions to this that you should be aware of in which confidentiality may be broken.

    These are:

    1. If you express the desire to harm yourself or another person

    2. If you say you are going to kill yourself and have the means to do so.

    3. If there is legal court subpoena

    4. If you give written consent to share any relevant information with another party for a referral to another professional organisation e.g., your GP.

  • Can I do counselling even if I don't have a specific problem?

Yes, counselling is not only for addressing specific problems. It can be beneficial for personal growth, self-discovery, and enhancing overall well-being.

  • Is counselling only for adults?

No, counselling is available for individuals of all ages, including children and adolescents. Confidentiality and age appropriate guidelines apply.

  • Do I Need a GP Referral?

No, you do not need a GP referral or referral from anywhere else to book with us. You are able to book counselling sessions directly with Go the Flow Counselling by simply clicking on the “Book appointment” button found on a number of pages and also in the top right of the menu bar.

  • Are there any Medicare or health fund rebates?

No, unfortunately there are no Healthcare or Medicare rebates available. We are in Private Practice only, which is why you are able to attend sessions without a referral and you are also not required to pay a large upfront fee before a rebate.

Our fees are kept at a very reasonable price and close to what the out-of-pocket cost is anyway of Clinical fees. We have done this so all clients can access counselling without having to have their GP records noted or for those who cannot afford expensive Clinical fees.
